I'll be honest with you: I'm biased. I live on Lake Minnetonka, in Wayzata, and I've spent more summers than I'll admit pointing friends, clients, and newcomers toward the spots that make this lake special. There's a reason people fall in love with this place in June and start looking at homes by August.
Lake Minnetonka's 14,000-plus acres of interconnected bays anchor a string of charming lakeside villages — Wayzata, Excelsior, Orono, Mound, Spring Park — each with its own personality. Spend one weekend dock-hopping between restaurants, wandering a Saturday art festival, and catching fireworks over a bay, and you'll understand why this is the most coveted real estate west of Minneapolis.

The lake's event calendar is one of its best-kept secrets. Here are the ones worth planning around in 2026.
Excelsior Art on the Lake — June 13–14, 2026. The unofficial kickoff to lake season. More than 150 juried artists fill Commons Park along Water Street with painting, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, and textiles, all set to live music and regional food vendors. Admission is free, you can arrive by boat and dock in Excelsior Bay, and there are vintage streetcar rides and complimentary community cruises during the festival. Hosted by the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber of Commerce.
Wayzata Art Experience — late June 2026. My hometown's juried art festival brings art lovers from across the Twin Cities to downtown Wayzata's walkable lakefront — the perfect excuse to combine browsing with a patio lunch.
Minnetonka Summer Fest — Saturday, June 27, 2026, 4–10:30 p.m. A free, family-focused evening at Minnetonka Civic Center Park with a kids' fun run, food vendors, live entertainment, and fireworks to close it out.
Fourth of July at Excelsior Commons — Saturday, July 4, 2026. This is the one. The Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber hosts the only public Fourth of July fireworks display on Lake Minnetonka. The day starts with the Firecracker Run around 7:30 a.m. and builds through kids' programming, food, and live music before fireworks launch over Excelsior Bay around 10 p.m. Boaters anchor in the bay for a front-row seat — it's a Minnetonka tradition.
Concerts in the Commons — May through September. Free outdoor concerts at Excelsior Commons throughout the summer, organized by the Excelsior Morning Rotary. Come by land or anchor your boat in the bay. Sunsets over the water with live music is summer in Minnesota distilled.
Spirit of the Lakes Festival & Minnesota Wakesurf Championship — mid-July. One of the biggest weekends on the lake. Thousands gather at Surfside Park in Mound and on Cook's Bay for the Midwest's largest wakesurfing competition, plus a parade, live music, food trucks, and fireworks.
Excelsior Apple Days — September 18–20, 2026. Technically the season's grand finale, but worth circling now. Running every September since 1935, it's one of the oldest continuous community festivals in the metro — apple pie contests, a historic walking tour, a street dance, and that unhurried small-town feel.

The best waterfront restaurants on Lake Minnetonka
Half the fun of lake life is dock-and-dine. Here are my go-to spots by community.
In Wayzata: 6Smith sits right on Wayzata Bay with award-winning patio dining, artisan meat and seafood, public docks, and complimentary parking — it's regularly voted one of the best on the lake. COV Wayzata brings an East Coast, Hamptons-style elegance with lakefront views and live music after 5:30. For an elevated night out, ninetwentyfive inside the Hotel Landing serves coastal-inspired New American, and Gianni's Steakhouse has the best see-and-be-seen sidewalk patio (plus dockside takeout for boaters). For brunch, locals love Benedict's; for sushi, Sushi Fix.
In Excelsior: Maynard's is a Lake Minnetonka institution — a massive lakeside patio that seats hundreds, a stone fireplace for cooler nights, and walleye that keeps generations coming back. Lago Tacos offers dockside street tacos and top-shelf margaritas, and Adele's has been scooping frozen custard for more than 35 years.
Around the rest of the lake: Lord Fletcher's in Spring Park is a sprawling lakeside supper club with over 100 boat slips. Al & Alma's on Cook's Bay in Mound has been a classic supper club and charter-cruise outfit since 1956. And Birch's on the Lake in Long Lake pairs a Wisconsin-style supper club upstairs with a brewhouse and deck below.

Shopping: Wayzata polish meets Excelsior charm
The two main shopping villages have completely different vibes, and that's the beauty of it.
Downtown Wayzata is the upscale, lakefront shopping destination. The Promenade of Wayzata is a pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use development anchored by Anthropologie and a curated mix of boutiques and home stores. Along Lake Street you'll find independent gems: Five Swans for fine china, gifts, and housewares; Fashion Avenue 2 for luxury consignment (think Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Hermès); 44 North for contemporary women's fashion and everything you need for a weekend on the boat; Highcroft for luxury linens; and Gunderson's Jewelers for custom design. It's a walkable afternoon with lake views the whole way.
Downtown Excelsior is the local-charm counterpoint. Water Street and the surrounding blocks pack in independently owned boutiques, antique shops, art galleries, and gift stores — the kind of place where you wander for an afternoon and leave with something you won't find anywhere else. If you're here in midsummer, catch Crazy Days, Excelsior's big sidewalk sale, or the monthly Artimer Market with local vendors, live music, and a beer tent.

Parks, beaches, and trails locals love
You don't need to own a boat to enjoy the lake — some of the best spots are public and free.
Lake Minnetonka Regional Park (Minnetrista) is the family headquarters. Managed by the Three Rivers Park District, it has a chlorinated, sandy-bottom swim pond, a nautical-themed play area, a fishing pier, a boat launch, disc golf, and miles of paved trails. The historic Schmid Farmhouse ruins are now a self-guided interpretive feature worth a look.
Noerenberg Gardens (Orono) is my recommendation when you want serenity. Set on the shore of Crystal Bay, this former Grain Belt Brewery estate is widely regarded as one of the finest formal gardens in Minnesota. It's open May through October — note there's no swimming, food, or pets, which keeps it peaceful. A favorite for weddings and photos.
Wayzata Beach Park is the epicenter of family fun in town — a big sandy shore, a huge playground, volleyball, Adirondack chairs, and a summer concession stand. For cyclists and walkers, the paved Dakota Rail Regional Trail runs 13.5 scenic miles from Wayzata southwest through Orono, Spring Park, and Mound, hugging the lake the whole way.
And for a dose of history, board the Steamboat Minnehaha at the Wayzata Depot for the Gold Coast tour past the lake's grand historic estates.
